Lion President Tim
To paraphrase a well known saying from a Yorkshire corner shop owner, “It’s been a funny old year.” (If you can’t remember the ancient TV programme, come and join the Lions. We need younger members!) We’ve all started on the road to some sort of normality as the year has progressed and Wetherby Lions has been able to resume some of its roles in the community. Hopefully 2023 will allow us to roll out some more of our larger events.
To me, Chicago means two things – the start of Route 66 and the International Headquarters of the Lions, which, if you were not aware, is probably the largest voluntary organisation in the world. Wetherby Lions are but a small cog in this wheel with an emphasis on serving local need, but as this has been a funny old year we have taken part in a few international projects as well as local ones and I am proud to mention three of them below. More in depth descriptions are listed as you investigate the website further.
The generosity of the people of Wetherby allowed us to donate a substantial sum of money to help the people of Ukraine via the International Headquarters. An interesting talk on toilets at one meeting resulted in Wetherby Lions sponsoring six of them in Africa for much needed projects and finally, at Tockwith Show we introduced young Americans to the sport of flat cap throwing, which, with a bit of luck, will spread back to Chicago.
Locally I am glad to say we were able to sponsor two much needed family escapes of a week each to the Filey Lions caravan at the coast, support other projects referred to us by social services and hold the Senior Citizens Christmas Party in April ! The latter was enjoyed by all who attended and no one objected to receiving an Easter Egg instead of a Christmas present.
Looking ahead to the remainder of the year, dates have been set for the ‘Dickensian Christmas Market and Craft Fayre’ in December and we are negotiating with Santa and his Elves to come to Wetherby and visit as many homes as we can fit in.
I look forward to meeting as many people as possible around the town and if you feel you can support the Lions in any way please get in touch.
