Wetherby and District Lions Club celebrated their 50th Anniversary by holding their Charter Anniversary Dinner at the Rudding Park Hotel on Saturday 23rd of April 2016.

This milestone in the Club’s history marks 50 years of continuous service to the community, having raised more than 3/4 £Million in fund raising, 90% of which was channeled to local causes, but not forgetting the wider appeals to international causes through our Lions International organization.
Lion President Robert Rolfe also was pleased to acknowledge, during the evening, the 50 years of dedicated service by Lion Colin Gaden (the only remaining original Charter Member of the Club) and his partner Gillian.

Wetherby District Lions Club is awarded ‘Charitable Incorporated Organisation’ status by the Charity Commission after six months after applying.

This means that:

  • the Lions now has a legal personality of its own, enabling it to conduct business in its own name;

  • the members and trustees are personally safeguarded from the financial liabilities.

Wetherby Lions can now go on to present ‘big and better’ events and raise more money for local charities

The Great Yorkshire Bike Ride (GYBR) is an annual event organised by John Taylorson MBE with the help of logistical support from Wetherby District Lions Club and has raised over £1.28million over the last 10 years for participating charities.  The route is from Wetherby Race Course to Filey Brigg, a distance of about 72 miles over a carefully chosen route across the Yorkshire Wolds.  There are 5 Rest Stops en route with the main lunch stop at Terrington, where food and drink are supplied free of charge.  Up to 2000 riders can enter and every year late entries unfortunately have to be turned away, such is the reputation of this fantastic event. The event takes place this year on Saturday the 18th of June 2016.

The main participating charities this year a...
