What does the word ‘Lions’ conjure up? Africa? Safari Parks? Rugby Union? Wetherby?

Yes, Wetherby!

In practice it is ‘Wetherby and District Lions’ and our stamping ground covers a wide area including Seacroft; Walshford; Harewood; Collingham; Boston Spa; Clifford; Bramham; Tadcaster and all places in between.

Who are we and what do we do? In a nutshell, Wetherby District Lions are members of Lions International and comprise a group of local people of all ages who organise events, raise money and support their local community – simple!! Our motto is ‘We Serve’.

In ‘normal’ times, our major annual events would include the annual Wetherby Beer Festival; the Wetherby Duck Race; The Great Yorkshire Bike Ride; our famous Dickensian Christmas Market and Santa’s sleigh rides round the district. Our efforts are supported by over fifty small and very large local businesses.

What do we do with funds raised? A very great deal! Most recently we have supported:

  • Christmas hampers for families in Wetherby and Bramham;

  • provided vouchers to say ‘thank you!’ to voluntary carers that can be redeemed for a meal from local restaurants;

  • provided laptops to Wetherby High School for pupils to use at home;

  • worked with the Salvation Army and Morrison’s to collect toys for Christmas;

  • supported the purchase of trees for the Deepdale area of Boston Spa;

  • provided new benches for the Riverside in Wetherby.

COVID-19 has had a major impact on all of us and the Lions and other volunteers have been pleased to help out at the Wetherby Health Centre by providing shelter for, and support to, members of the community during the vaccination programme.

Unfortunately, the pandemic forced the cancellation of all last year’s events except Santa’s sleigh. Looking forward to better times, we hope to be able to organise events and, once again, engage with our local community. In the meantime, if you wish to support us financially you can make a donation, of any size, at
