The Great Yorkshire Bike Ride Presentation

The Great Yorkshire Bike Ride presentation at the Functions Suite Farnell element14 Leeds on Saturday 30th of October 2015

The Great Yorkshire Bike Ride (GYBR) is an annual sponsored charity cycle ride taking in a carefully planned 70 mile route from Wetherby Racecourse and finishing at the Country Park Filey, with 5 rest stops en route, including a Lunch stop at Terrington where hot food is provided for the riders. John Taylorson, MBE is the Event Organiser and Wetherby Lions Club, for over the past 25 years have assisted his team with the logistics of the event. Planning commenced in April and this year the event took place on Saturday the 6th of June.

Wetherby Lions main tasks are to book and staff the rest stops, allocate marshals for the 79 marshaling points along the route and run a safety seminar for the charities involved, liaising closely with the North Yorkshire Police. We do this with the help of the following Lions Clubs: Boroughbridge, Harrogate, Filey, Northallerton Lionesses, Scarborough and Thirsk.

This year we recruited volunteers for marshaling from the following charities: Candlelighters Trust, Epilepsy Uk; Heart Research UK, Hollybank Trust, Jennyruth Workshops, Physcap, Ryedale MENCAP and Yorkshire Cancer Research. St. John Ambulance cover the route and have units at the both the lunch stop and the finish at Filey.

At the evening presentation, John Taylorson reported that over 1800 riders took part and this year’s sponsorship had amounted to a staggering £144,175! The audience of riders and charity representatives received this news with warm applause. He then made awards to individual and team riders who had raised significant totals. This was followed by cheque presentations to the various charities, including Wetherby Lions Club (photograph attached).

Wetherby Lions Club is proud to be associated with this prestigious event and we look forward to assisting next year, when it will take place on Saturday 18th of June. If cyclists wish to take part in this event, take a look at the GYBR website on www.gybr.co.uk early next year.

This event, although an important one for us, is not the only activity that we are engaged in over the year. Take a look at our website www.wetherbylions.org to see what we have achieved this year. We always welcome enquiries from potential members.
