The prestigious Wetherby Lions Townsperson of the Year award remains up for grabs as we enter the run-up to Christmas.

Many great deeds will have been done over the course of what has been an extraordinary year. And the Lions are seeking nominations of those who have gone out of their way to improve lives, make an impact on our lovely town or done something amazing.

Last year Lion President Tim was pleased to present Simon Donkin with the much-coveted ‘Wetherby Townsperson of the Year 2019/20 Award’ in front of an excited crowd at our ‘Dickensian Christmas Market’ held in December 2019.

Simon has been involved in organising events in Wetherby for the last 35 years. It was in fact his 32nd year organising the Community Bonfire this year.

Known as a very proud and modest person, has never sought any recognition for the work he does for Wetherby behind the scenes. Notwithstanding, he has worked with 'Wetherby Arts Festival', 'Wetherby Musical Theatre Group' and 'Welcome to Wetherby' among many others. He was a key person in 2012 in the organisation of the 'Last Night of the Proms' for the Queens Diamond Jubilee. And on behalf of the Wetherby Lions he has provided the public address system for the Wetherby Duck Race and has been involved in the 'Wetherby Beer Festival; the Wetherby Christmas Lights Switch On and Remembrance Sunday have also benefited from his input.

As well as holding down a very responsible job Simon always puts Wetherby first and now his name will be etched forever in the town’s history. Again congratulations, Simon, from Wetherby Lions.
