January 2021 got off to a flying start in the battle against Covid-9

With over a thousand of the most vulnerable people in Wetherby and the surrounding area vaccinated in the first week of the year, the mammoth operation, the first of many scheduled, saw NHS staff and local volunteers combine forces to create a smooth running machine which elicited praise from many of those attending the clinic.

Sophie Dawson, Wetherby Primary Care Network Manager who coordinated the complex logistics of the event, paid tribute to the hard work of the NHS staff at Wetherby Health Centre and the volunteers from all parts of the community. "It was a delight," she commented," to see everyone working so tirelessly against a common enemy."

Support came in all forms from all over the district to create a safe outdoor waiting area. One large gazebo was provided by Bramham Parish Council, two more (renamed 'jab-ebos' by some members of the public whose sense of humour had not been dulled by the cold weather) were sourced from Wetherby Lions and chairs were transferred from Wetherby Town Hall to create a relatively comfortable haven from the snowy conditions outside. Wetherby Tool Hire combined electric heating units with a generator from Marsland Timber to keep out the cold for those maintaining social distancing whilst waiting for the vaccination.

President of Wetherby Lions, Tim Ritson paid tribute to the smooth operation and the willing volunteers. "I am really pleased to feel that I am part of a community which will pull out all the stops to make this such a successful first step in the road to normality and safeguard the most vulnerable in our society. Wetherby Lions have contributed wheelchairs and shelters normally used in events organised by the Lions which have had to be cancelled this year. I am delighted to see these resources, which have been funded by local businesses and public donations, are being put to such effective use in these difficult times".

"It has been a pleasure to mix with people from other voluntary groups and members of the public who simply want to help where they can!"
